My mom had the tendency to use a black Sharpie on the white tschotkes (sp) in our house while I was growing up.
Understand how I got the way I am now?:-)
On another note, a couple of stateside observations:
1. Does anyone really need a triple cheeseburger?
2. Just what is up with all of the weaves?
3. Reality shows. Why? Are there no TV actors left anymore? Someone call SAG! (Although I’m becoming slowly addicted to the Style Network and the Food Network).
3.5. Has the definition of “breaking news” changed? Two days after the Minneapolis bridge collapse, networks were still labeling it this.
4. There’s nothing better than lunch at Piccadilly Cafeteria (the one down the street from Graceland is a Whitehaven institution). Oh to have a year’s supply of their macaroni and cheese.
5. Question: Where did all of the new alphabet diseases come from? It’s not PMS anymore, it’s premenstrual dys-something disorder (PMDD). You don’t have bunions, you have POD, Podiatric Osteo Dysmorphia.
I’m joking with that last one.
6. In Europe, I’m medium to large (Size 40-42: I have to shop in the “big girl” section at H&M due to Mother Africa.) In the US, I’m a SIZE 6, which is part of the reason why….
7….I’m staying the heck away from Krispy Kreme. Yes y’all, I’ve been here almost a week and have yet to succumb to the lure of that bright red glow in the window.

love, love, love every bit of this post.
you’re brilliant!
now that I’ve been State-side for over a year, I’m beginning to worry that the madness may be creeping its way into my head.
cheers!

@Kristi - NOOOOOOO! Fight the BORG!
Your mom rocks :)
@Angela - Yeah, but sometimes I have to fight the urge to pull my Sharpie out in museums.:-)
I think you will find the H&M stores here have the same European sizing. I’m always a larger size in European clothes than in American.
But it is true that Americans do over indulge in the food department. Could learn something from the Euros there.
The weaves… wow… what can I say. Even Oprah’s getting them. I think this might be heavily influenced by today’s entertainment artists.
Well in my opinion the Europeans are over indulging in the eating area as well .
I see many more overweight people than i did 8 years ago.
Food is everywhere!!!!!
@Jocelyn - > H&M is in the US? Get out. Had no idea. And I think the price of getting a weave has come down, making it more affordable. But, I had one a looong time ago and found it a nightmare to keep up. I just don’t have the type of lifestyle to have one. I’m a tad bit too active.
@Denise - > I think this depends on what part of CH you’re in. In Zurich, I can count on my hand the overweight people I’ve seen. I remember reading in, what was it, NZZ Portfolio maybe, about a story comparing women in CH. The writer said that Zurich women looked anorexic. I won’t go that far, but I will say that I wonder how the women I see pushing carriages with newborns AND dragging a toddler can be a size 2. That’s just not normal.
Yes H&M is stateside . I have shopped at the store in NYC and they are on LI as well .
San Francisco also .
Rashunda, yes there is a definite difference between the two cities.
I think these woman don’t eat!
My sister-in-law (Lucerne) is 5′7′ and weights about 110lbs. Last I heard she picks at her breakfast, skips lunch and picks at her dinner. All of her friends are thin like her. It is definitely a trend in certain circles in Switzerland.
I have heard that the British are getting fatter though.
