I had a friend in high school who took accutane and had wonderful results. Yes, it gets worse before it gets better but she had lovely skin afterwards.

On the other hand, my nephew also took it (although not as religiously as my friend) and had his kidneys tested frequently. He had to stop taking it and still has considerable acne.

My brother took it…after the first week of literally exploding acne (he wore a t-shirt under his pajamas to soak up the blood and nastiness) as everything came to the surface of the skin, he cleared up amazingly. No side effects other than chronically dry lips. He went either weekly or biweekly to get blood tests, and all was fine. My mother, on the other hand, had side effect after side effect to the point where it wasn’t worth it anymore. Cracked skin, fatigue, and horrendous leg cramps. If it works, it’s amazing…I’d love to take it but I’m afraid of any side effects. I tend to be perpetually in that “some people may experience…” category.

Well, I’m about to start taking it tomorrow. I’m not sure what will happen because the side effects tend to vary from person to person. I know someone that took it and all they had was dry skin and lips, nothing more. They cleared up completely.

I have taken three full courses of Accutane. I was a bit older than the average user, in my late twenties. Each time, I had absolutely wonderful results. The horrible and painful acne on my face and scalp not only cleared up completely, for the first time since I was an adolecent, my skin actually felt smooth. I had absolutely no side effects. And contrary to the notion that Accutane can cause users to suffer depression, I was ELATED! The only problem for me is that it seems to be only a temporary fix! I took it once, was clear for about a year after, then had to take it again. Ditto for the second and third treatments. And unfortunately, my derm says three courses of Accutane is all that is allowed. Otherwise, I would still be taking it today!

I would encourage anyone to talk to there doc about it. I am on my second month of sotret the generic form of accutane. Here is a suggestion my doctor started me on half of my normal dose for the first month. To sort of ease me into the dryness other side effects. I think that has really helped. my skin is clearer up already. I can’t wait till month 5 and hopefully the results last. My doctor told me that is doesn’t work for 2 out of 10 people, not bad odds!!!
