The Bush camp isn’t worried about Iraq, the economy, or anything else that would, in reasonable times, threaten the livelihood of a sitting administration. Nope. Bush is banking on something that has kept his poll numbers from diving at a nose-bleed inducing speed.
Stupidity.
First example: Tom Ridge’s announcement last week that there was “evidence” that Al Qaeda was planning an attack close to the November elections. Even if the dude is facing a “damned if I do, damned if I don’t” situation (in terms of to warn or not to warn), I found this announcement to be interesting.
Second example: I woke up this morning to find that there is chance (albeit a small one) that the administration is looking into ways to delay the elections in case of attack. Mind you, this is only a “what if” measure…but still….hmmm…interesting
Third example: Now there’s news that Bush’s military records were inadvertently destroyed. This wouldn’t be so important if the records weren’t the ones that supposedly could have shown he’d fulfilled his military commitment.
I can hear Scott McClellan now: See, he really did fulfill his duty. We promise!
Hmmm. It’s hard to prove / disprove something when the evidence has been destroyed huh? Just ask a few Iraqis.
Apparently the microfilm containing the records “disintegrated as the staff were trying to preserve it from decay”. Now, I’m neither an archiving specialist nor a scientist but something ain’t right with that story. The records that “disintegrated” came from the period between 1969 - 1972. I know a lot depends on what type of microfilm was used, but that means the life span of that microfilm was *only* around 35 years or less. From what I remember waaay back in school, you can get at least 50 years out of microfilm. Again, a lot of this hedges on what type of microfilm used (chemical composition), storage conditions, etc.
I’m 34. I don’t think that the Memphis and Shelby County Health Department has the most up to date archival system…and my records are still around.
Just a thought.
So, I strongly believe that the Bush and his ilk are continuing to play the “okey-doke” because they’re betting on us…
1. …not to think.
2. …not to question.
3. …not to get angry.
And to live in fear.
If any another administration anywhere else was pulling this type of crap, you’d have folks marching in the streets, demanding answers, getting pissed. <sarcasm>But no. The most important things on our minds are life threatening issues such as file swapping, gay marriage, and Janet’s nipple.</sarcasm>
You wouldn’t keep a friend who thought you were stupid.
Would you keep a president who did the same?

I saw Farenheit 9/11 today. It is an excellent propaganda film. I’m sure it will actually sway the election for Kerry/Edwards.
There is hope Bush will be gone soon.
Kerry is also a member of Skulls and Bones, the Democrats are the slightly less rightern wing of the Republicans. Bush, Kerry, does it really matter except from the style of communications?
Absolutely it matters. The USA is not a leftist country, and never will be.
Jogn Edwards supports the states rights to individually decide gay marriage - that’s a far cry from Bush.
Is there a single leftist country on earth? Elections aren’t about left or right anway, they are about power and influence of the rich and mighty, covered by so-called democracy (not only in the US).
So, what’s about Kerry? He is probably in favour of gay marriage because he hopes that will make him distinguishable from Bush… do you really think that Kerry wouldn’t have abused 9/11 for coup d’état like Bush? Just think of Kerry’s view on the fascistic PATRIOT act…
I don’t think Kerry would have gone down the same road the same way as Bush. I believe there still would have been a war, but I think things would have played out differently. Perhaps the troops would have been home by now. I’m only guessing. The big difference is that Bush really and truly isn’t running the show. Therefore, he’s relying on the judgement of those around him…and look at who he has around him. Kerry would have had a different mindset to bounce things off of.
Yes, Kerry and Edwards voted for the PA…but they believed the evidence being presented to them. Is that a good excuse. No. I think it sucks that they did…but what choice did they have? What choice do *we* have *now*? We’re choosing the lesser of two evils. As Ron Reagan put it “the Democrats are trying to out-Republican the Republicans”. This is how I feel sometimes…but again…what are we to do?
It boils down who I feel more comfortable voting for on November 2.
There is a tremendous difference between Kerry & Edwards and BushCo. To pretend otherwise is astounding. While I hate Kerry’s stance on marriage equality (there ain’t no such thing as Gay marriage, just marriage equality), I know a vote for Bush is a vote for all out dictatorship. I’m absolutely convinced the Repugnants will cancel/postpone the election if their Sept/Oct surprise (”Hey, we got Osama!”) doesn’t seal the election for them. The recent announcement that Florida won’t use the purge voter list means they have to find another way to steal Florida again.
Preach on, sister Rashunda.
Sadly, there are a lot of stupid people in this country. And if the polls are any indication (and who knows if THEY’RE true), the stupid people are still in the majority.
I’m assuming that you still retain your American citizenship, since it sounds like you might be voting in November. Depending on what happens I may be picking your brain on what it’s like to live abroad. It’s starting to sound better and better each day.
1. Did you know there’s no statute of limitations on war crimes?
2. No military orders were ever cut for a single item. usually the general orders have dozens of people listed. Oh sorry many of you lack any education in those things. Too bad
Just read the IHT article from the Boston Globe…Bush uses Cliffe’s Notes…July 15 opinion page. All said and done, doesn’t the buck stop at the top? Don’t we still hold our presidnet accountable? And the big question, is it really constitutional to pre-empt? We get all excited about Clinton’s behavior with an intern but can’t seem to place blame in war times.? What up with Americans-and I am one of them-all be it an overseas American. And-yes I am voting! After all, I still pay US taxes :)
PS I’d love to know what landroll is talking about in point 2.

“This nation was not founded by habitual groupthinkers. But it stands a fair chance of being destroyed by them. “
Barbara Ehrenreich in the NYT
I dug this entry. And i feel you 100%. but i have this feeling that Bush will either lose or win by a very narrow margin. that thought is scary.
Just a few comments along the way.
First, I don’t understand the furor over talking about delaying the election if there’s a terrorist attack on election day or a few days before. New York delayed it’s election on 9/11 and democracy prevailed - plus, what most people complaining don’t realize is that a terrorist attack would likely help President Bush in an election. Imagine if election day was September 12, 2001, would anyone have beaten any President (of either party) in power on that day? Doubtful.
Second, gay marriage can’t be anything but a state issue. Even if Congress approves an amendment banning gay marriage, it needs to be approved by the states. If it’s not, then the Amendment fails. And, if you’re opposed to having one law for the entire country on this issue, imagine how much easier the 2000 election would have been if our method of voting was consistent nationwide.
Third, (and last) for everyone living overseas, I encourage you to vote. But realize, if it’s a close election like last time, you will be the first people disenfranchised. Nothing got changed after the last election because each side thought the other was trying to screw it over (and they probably were). For any change to happen, the us/them mentality has to disappear. Not every decision made by every politican is part of a larger plot to take over the country through illegal means.
Rashunda, have you already seen Fahrenheit 9/11?
Don - No, I haven’t seen it. It doesn’t come out here until August.
Erick - I never said that “every” decision made by “every” politician was a plot. Only one in particular. Also, to say that you don’t understand why everyone is so skittish is wild to me. Remember, 2000 isn’t that far away. The elections were a fiasco. That taught me that anything is possible.
Shall I send you Fahrenheit 9/11 on CD-ROM? Just let me know, either here or by e-mail (dfolu9eqgh1163h@jetable.net)! :)
Another excellent movie is ‘Outfoxed - Rupert Murdoch’s War on Journalism’; you can order the DVD at Amazon.com for just USD 9.95!
Rashunda - I understand why people are skittish. That’s the only response acceptable any time people’s votes aren’t allowed to speak for themselves and interpreters are allowed. My concern is that nothing was done to make improvements. Republicans had no incentive because “they won” and Democrats would rather say “selected not elected” than come up with a solution that would fix a problem that helps them as often as it hurts.
Each state (and ideally the entire country) needs to use the same voting equipment. Until that happens, fraud will be impossible to avoid.
