One of the reasons why I get so damned embarrassed over my fellow Americans is this bullshit right here. The FCC has the audacity to launch an investigation over Janet Jackson’s boob flash during the Super Bowl?!? Am I missing something? Maybe I’ve been in Europe too long, but there’s more of a damned controversy over a woman showing her breast, and a very nice one mind you, on television than (insert anything and everything our present administration has done here)?
What the hell has the US come to? So, there’s nothing wrong with a network showing someone getting their chest blown open, or showing war detainees (and thus violating the Geneva Convention), or showing anything else violent…but a woman can’t show her freaking boob?!?!?!
This is sick. I’m so sick of this converted sense of morality I could just freaking scream. Hell, I wish Justin had tweaked her nipple just for shits and giggles! If I thought anyone would notice, I’d show a boobie too (I’m a 34A so I doubt I’d cause a stir).

What gets me, is that the NFL Cheerleaders show WAY more flesh than Janet did. And what about Lil’ Kim with one tit hanging out all the time on TV? Or Christina Aguillera showing most of her ass?
Or hell, Cher has worn less fabric than the part torn away as an entire costume on a video.
What we need is for all the people offended by the “outrage” to also write letters to the FCC and phone. And go write a complimentary message on Janet’s site.

I agree with the strange reality that violence is fine to show, yet boobs are filthy? We see people blowing eachother to smithereens in the movies but as soon as the actors have sex, women cover themselves up completely.
On the other hand, I do believe it is rather inappropriate for a family show, what the SB ultimately is. And Justin Timberlake sort of said, with this action: I can do whatever I like with your boob, I can violently rip your clothes off if I like. I find that inappropriate for young kids. In fact, I find the whole obsession with sex on MTV cs. inappropriate.
So it is much more the message than the boob that pisses me off. (and I am from Holland, the most liberal place on earth I think)
@Marieke: Maybe the difference is that I don’t see the SB as a family show. Maybe my family was different, but daddy didn’t exactly invite me to hang out with his buddies while they watched the game.
Also, the rip was planned. Do you really think leather can be snatched away that easily and cleanly? It was all done for publicity. I can almost bet that Janet has another album coming out soon.

This hysteria over a boob just slays me. It happened so fast that I missed it. I just don’t understand how people are so outraged and concerned about their children getting a quick glimpse of a breast when they weren’t concerned about barely dressed cheerleaders, drunken fans, streakers, commercials featuring a horse farting in a woman’s face … This is positively insane! Then we want to get self-righteous about Islamic extremism and its treatment of women.
And now, the mouth of the North, South, East, and West, (Spike Lee) is talking about it being a new low. That’s why I can’t stand Spike. He always opens his big mouth about anything he deems inappropriate from a black woman but, he let’s the “indescresions” of black men go. I’m not offended by Janet’s boob. Rashunda is right about the violence/sex thing. It’s twisted, embarrassing and makes America look like asses to the rest of the world. Although, Bushy is doing that on his own.

Why on earth is Janet Jackson’s tit the top story in my newspaper, when we have : An investigation into faulty (and intentionally skewed) pre-invasion intelligence; a war on in Iraq; a presidential race in full bloom; ricin in Congress; a massive budget deficit and a new budget promising only more red ink ….
And the FCC is going to spend my tax money invesigating Janet Jackson’s nipple? This sudden moral outrage is stunning to me. We see bloody commercials for unrated horror movies during the Super Bowl, beer commercials whose subtext is that women are objects for drunken groping, and four quarters of sanctioned violence during the game itself, but one partially obscured boob is overshadowing all else.
It makes me feel even less that I am a citizen of this country than the war has. Am I an alien, or is this a problem of priorities?
I’ve seen enough. Nipplegate has entered the twighlight zone on my nightly news. Yesterday, one local station actually interviewed a rape crisis counselor from a nearby county and asked her, “Does this sort of thing make it harder for you to do your job?” To which said counselor replied, brow furrowed to precise specifications, “Of course. Teenagers do what they see on TV.”
Pretty soon we’re going to require all teenagers be on a leash at all times, because they clearly cannot be trusted to think critically or have any sort of common sense.
Maybe what bothers me most is that we are sending this message that boobs are dangerous for children. “Oh my god, Daisy, you saw a human breast! Are you feeling OK? Do you need therapy?” I think this attitude is what creates kids with skewed ideas about sex. That it’s shameful, that the human body is horrific and should be kept in a dark cellar forever (except if you’re married and trying to have a baby. in which case it’s suddenly beautiful).
As is often the case, those who are offended are bringing more attention to the entire situation by complaining than if they had just kept their mouths shut.
At least this time they saw what they’re complaining about. Too many times, they’re protesting based on third hand reports.
I remember talking to someone who went with her friend to see the (reportedly really bad) movie Cool World. This had to have been 10 years ago.
She was shocked that one woman had brought three young children, all 7 or younger, to the movie. The kids saw all kinds of violence and she didn’t do anything to cover their eyes, but as soon as a cartoon character started undressing she pulled them out of the theater.
I’m all for appropriate behavior, and what happened on Sunday wasn’t appropriate, but that’s now no longer the issue.
Why is it that something that is natural and universal is seen by so many people as wrong and evil, yet actions that need to be taught, like hate and intolernence, are held up as actions that should be tolerated?
Whites dont have a problem with putting Black Folk all over their documentaries and books naked for their own studies but please dont let one of Us do it for entertainment!? Shit! i want to see the other the breast now! i’d ratha see her breast anyday ratha than another commercial ad for penile dysfunction during the superbowl!
